We are privileged in our life time to be exposed to the wisdom and spiritual vitality of a chosen few men who are especially selected by God for the building of His kingdom. Bishop Eugene Edward Hamilton, organizer of California Northwest Jurisdiction, was one of those men.

On January 10, 1955, the Reverend Hamilton was ordained Bishop and he served initially over the diocese of the State of Idaho. He was a man of inexhaustible vitality, love and human kindness and after serving many years as a District Superintendent in Northern California, God gave him the wisdom, the followship of the Brethren, and the consent of the General Church to organize the State of California Northwest of the Churches of God in Christ in 1957.

The Jurisdiction of California Northwest was organized on the platform of peace and harmony with six great Superintendents, great men, such as, Bishop George W. McGlothen, Bishop Isaac Finley, Superintendent B.B. Alexander, Secretary Baby Perry, Dr. Alvin T. Wagoner, Dr. John Ramsey, twenty-two other pastors and many other wonderful men and women of God. The jurisdiction now has 25 District Superintendents and over 130 churches in cities from Bakersfield to Weed, California. Many of the Northwest churches have been organized for more than 50 years.

The Jurisdiction has been led by five great Holy Ghost filled Bishops – Bishop E.E. Hamilton (1957-1973, Bishop S.R. Martin 1973-1980, Bishop M. Mathis (1980-1985), Bishop C.J. Davis (1985-1986), and our current Prelate and General Board Member Bishop W.W. Hamilton1986-date). The fatherly spirit and commitment to holiness, great organization and administrative skills, commitment to prayer, a strong spiritual life, love for mission and support of the women’s work are attributes of all the California Northwest Jurisdictional Prelates.

From the great night of his organization in Oakland, California at 8th and Grove Street Church where Bishop I. Finley served as Pastor, Bishop E.E. Hamilton appointed a woman filled with love and respect for God’s men, Mother Mattie McGlothen. She had served with Bishop Samuel Crouch and Bishop B.R. Stewart in Northern California. Three Supervisors have led the women’s department: (Mothers Mattie McGlothen (1957-1994), Louise Perrodin (1994-2000) and Mary M. Welch (2000-date). These great supervisors have organized and systematized all women’s auxiliaries of the Jurisdiction, licensed missionaries, presided over all State meetings, appointed District Missionaries and supervised the setting up of all district women’s programs.

The Jurisdictional Workers’ Meetings and Convocations/AIMS are held in hotel convention centers to accommodate the approximately 5,000 saints in attendance; the jurisdiction has purchased a Jurisdictional Headquarters building and instituted the tithing system. Fourteen of the jurisdictional auxiliaries, bands and units have annual conferences in addition to the First Saturday Women’s Fellowship Meetings and Second Saturday Jurisdictional Meetings. Soul winning is the main focus of each auxiliary.

California Northwest is a well-established jurisdiction and is highly recognized throughout the brotherhood. Bishop W. W. Hamilton, Jurisdictional Prelate and General Board Secretary and Mother Mary M. Welch, Jurisdictional Supervisor have taken the Jurisdiction to new heights. The Jurisdiction shares in a great heritage and has held high the standard of holiness and continues to march without intimidation ever forward declaring to men and women everywhere the Gospel message of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
